Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos: fascinating historical sight in Cordoba

Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

The medieval fortress of the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos was originally built by King Alfonso XI on the base of the former Moorish Alcazar. It is located on the banks of the Guadalquivir river near the Roman bridge and Mezquita-Cathedral.

The structure has been used as a palace, a fortress and even a prison. It was finally opened for tourism in the 1950s. Beyond the simple exterior lie vast gardens and courtyards in the Mudéjar architectural style.

Upon entrance to the fortress you will have access to the walls and guard towers known as Paloma, Leones, Homenaje and Inquisición. Climb the stairs to get a view from above. The sight is popular with tourists and depending on the time of year it can get quite crowded in this section. I’m not sure about you, but I felt the bad energy from many centuries of dark history in this place.

Head to the gardens for more solitude and reflection. You’ll find peaceful tiled pools, gurgling fountains and beautiful plantings or trees and flowers to relax in the shade on a summer day. Perhaps bring a book or a snack and sit by a fountain for a while, enjoying the ambiance of the gardens.

After your visit to the gardens, return to the building to see the different halls and courtyards including the Salón de los Mosaicos, Patio Morisco and Royal Baths. The mosaics are absolutely stunning and not a very common sight in Spain. They date back from the Roman times and were found nearby during excavation works.
